Australian Open Singles title continues to elude Sam Stosur

The 2011 US Open Grand Slam champion and homegirl, Samantha Stosur has yet again failed in the Singles draw at the Australian Open Tennis tournament in Melbourne.

Stosur, a former Mixed Doubles title winner here in 2005 and Ladies Doubles finalist in 2006, has yet to advance beyond the 4th round in the Singles draw, and Lady Luck continued to elude her as she went down to Heather Watson of Britain, 3-6 6-3 0-6 on Margaret Court Arena yesterday.

In a display of tennis that was frustrating to say the least on Stosur’s part (especially in the third set), both players served 6 aces a piece with Stosur hitting more winners than Watson. But yet again, it was the lapse of concentration at crucial times and the 47 unforced errors that separated the two players.

Take nothing away from Watson, it wasn’t her best performance, made easier by Stosur’s errors, but she fired some scintillating return winners past the Aussie, who could only walk back to the baseline and smile.
