Another Strasbourg title for Samantha Stosur

The Australian No. 1 Ladies tennis player and 6th seed, Samantha Stosur, clinched her second Strasbourg title, when she defeated fellow countrywoman and 7th seed, Daria Gavrilova, 5-7 6-4 6-3, yesterday.

This brings to an end, a 22 month drought for Stosur, who last won two titles in 2015 (Strasbourg and Bastad).

The win also means that she will retain her No. 1 Australian ranking, which Gavrilova has been hot on her heels to take over.

Despite Stosur’s up and down form over the past two years, she was at 22 April 2017, ranked at No. 4 on the WTA Insider : 2017 Clay Court Power Rankings, behind (1) Garbine Muguruza, (2) Simona Halep and (3) Maria Sharapova.

Her nine WTA career titles (excluding the US Open) have been won on hard court (5 titles) and clay court (4 titles) surfaces.

The win could not have come at a better time for Stosur, who is in desperate need of a confidence booster going into the French Open, which got underway today.

Stosur feels that the clay court surfaces favour her game and she would dearly love to improve on her best French Open result, which was as runner up in the 2010 final.

Fellow Australians, Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty, got the Aussie party underway first, after defeating the top seeds, Chan Yung-Jan and Chan Hao-Ching, 6-4 6-2 in the Ladies Doubles final.
