Kvitova and Azarenka shine on Day 1

Two-time Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova, is continuing her fairy tale comeback, when she defeated Johanna Larsson of Sweden, 6-3 6-4 on Centre Court today.

Six months ago, Kvitova’s tennis future was very much in doubt after she was stabbed in her hand at home. Her determination to make a successful comeback was duly rewarded when she won the Birmingham Classic title two weeks ago, in only her second tournament played after returning to the WTA tour in May.

The popular Czech player will now face Madison Brengle of the USA in round two. Brengle defeated Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands 6-3 6-3 today.

Another player making a comeback this year is the former No. 1, Victoria Azarenka, who has returned to the tour after giving birth to her son, Leo.

Azarenka, a 2011 and 2012 Wimbledon semi-finalist, needed 1 hour and 45 minutes to see off a valiant effort by the 18 year old, Catherine Bellis of the USA, 3-6 6-2 6-1 on Court 1.

Azarenka will now await the outcome of the Elena Vesnina/Anna Blinkova match to see who her second round opponent will be.
