The seventh seed, Dominic Thiem of Austria got off to a flying start at the French Open today when he sailed past llya Ivashka of Belarus 6-2 6-4 6-1.
Thiem, who is one of the hopefuls to de-throne Nadal in Paris, recently defeated the Spanish “King of Clay” during their quarter final match at the Madrid Open in Spain.
Thiems next opponent will be Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, who defeated Carlos Taberner of Spain 7-5 6-7(5) 6-4 6-3.
Former World No. 1 and the 2016 French Open champion, Novak Djokovic, also got off to a winning start when he defeated Rogerio Dutra Silva of Brazil 6-3 6-4 6-4. He will now face Jaume Munar of Spain who defeated fellow countryman and stalwart, David Ferrer in a marathon match, 3-6 3-6 7-6(3) 7-6(4) 7-5.
The 2015 French Open champion, Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland, who is slowly returning to the tour after a six month layoff due to surgery last year, lost to Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 2-6 6-3 6-4 6-7(5) 3-6 during their first round match.
The rain ended the days proceedings early whilst the defending champion and World No. 1, Rafael Nadal was two sets up against Italy’s Simone Bolelli. When the players left the court, Bolelli was leading 3-0 in the third set.
