Serena and Sharapova overcome the first hurdle

Former World No. 1 and three-time French Open champion, Serena Williams, playing in her first Grand Slam tournament since winning her record breaking Australian Open last year and giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia, stepped onto Court Philippe Chatrier earlier today in an eye-catching black catsuit.

Going into the French Open, there was a lot of talk about Williams not being seeded, but one must remember that after giving birth to her daughter, she chose to delay her return until she felt ready to compete again.

Her opponent today was Karolina Pliskova’s elder twin sister, Kristyna. The two had never played before. Pliskova, being left handed is not an easy opponent to play and with lacking match practice, Serena was made to work extra hard for her 7-6(4) 6-4 victory.

Next up for Williams is the Australian player, Ashleigh Barty, seeded seventeenth. Barty has had a good year in both singles and doubles and should prove a formidable and tough opponent for the American.

Another former World No. 1 and two-time French Open champion, Maria Sharapova, whose match against Richel Hogenkamp from the Netherlands was postponed due to rain yesterday, was given a run for her money by the Dutch player before clinching the match 6-1 4-6 6-3 today.

Donna Vekic of Croatia, who defeated Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine 6-2 6-4 will be Sharapova’s next opponent.
