Court 1 was not kind to Grigor Dimitrov and Elina Svitolina yesterday.
In an unexpected turn of events, Fernando Verdasco of Spain gave the 4th seed, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria his marching orders, with a 7-6(4) 6-2 6-4 win.
Dimitrov, who has faired poorly on the clay surface this season, again failed to advance past the third round at Roland Garros, in this, his 8th ATP French Open appearance.
After the match, Dimitrov indicated that he intended on taking some time off to reassess his clay court season, and to prepare for the upcoming grass court season, where he has enjoyed more success.
There was also a shock exit in the Ladies section, when Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania upset the 4th seed, Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine 6-3 7-5.
Svitolina, who despite having won eight WTA titles in the past 16 months, has yet to advance past the quarter-finals at a Grand Slam tournament.
Although bitterly disappointed with her own performance, Svitolina credited her opponent who played a solid game of tennis.
