The much anticipated showdown between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova did not get underway today after Williams withdrew from the French Open with a suspected pectoral injury.
The announcement was made just hours before the two ladies were supposed to take centre stage on Court Chatrier this afternoon.
Williams will undergo an MRI tomorrow to assess the severity of the injury, but hopes to be back on track for Wimbledon, which starts on 2 July.
This means that Sharapova will face the 3rd seed, Garbine Muguruza in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
Muguruza was also given a breather when her fourth round opponent, Lesia Tsurenko, retired during the first set of their match.
