The British No. 1 Ladies player and 6th seed, Johanna Konta, showed her resilience as she managed to outgun the young and valiant Donna Vekic of Croatia in three thrilling sets, 7-6(4) 4-6 10-8, on Centre Court at Wimbledon today.

In a class act tennis match that lasted 3 hours and 10 minutes, with 23 aces served and 97 winners hit between the two players, there was little to separate them. Towards the latter part of the third set, both players were looking to their teams for some inspiration on how to cross the finish line first.

Vekic, who was being supported by her boyfriend, Grand Slam champion, Stan Wawrinka, just couldn’t break the Konta serve in the latter part of the third set. Everytime she was up 30-0, Konta just clawed her way back. As the match drew to a close, Vekic’s body language started to slump and despite saving one match point with a powerful ace, she relinquished the match by hitting a forehand return into the net.

This is the first time that Konta has reached the third round at the Wimbledon Championships. Next up for her will be Maria Sakkari of Greece, who shocked Kristyna Pliskova with a 6-7(6) 6-4 6-4 win.

In other action, the 8th seed, Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia booked her third round spot when she defeated Jennifer Brady of the USA, 6-4 6-4. Her next opponent is Ana Konjuh of Croatia, who defeated Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania, 7-6(3) 2-6 6-3.
