Former Proteas cricket captain and one of the greats of the game, AB De Villiers sent shock waves through the cricketing fraternity today when he announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket with immediate effect.

34 year old De Villiers made the announcement via video at the Tuks Cricket Club, which is based at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria. The venue is symbolic for De Villiers, who first started his Proteas cricketing career there fourteen seasons ago.

After playing in 420 test and international matches spanning over the various formats of the game and setting several records, De Villiers felt that it was time for others to take over and that he was tired. 

The decision was not an easy one but De Villiers felt that he wanted to retire “whilst still playing decent cricket” and following the fantastic series wins against India and Australia, he felt that now was the right time to bow out.

In true AB style, he will still remain the biggest supporter of Faf Du Plessis and the Proteas and hopes to be available to play for his home team, The Titans going forward.

While social media continues to buzz with tributes and disbelief, De Villiers opted for a low key exit from the international spotlight.

Some people believe he should have a hero’s send off, but AB being AB, has exited on a high note and on his terms. That for this humble cricketer, is enough spotlight.

All we can say is “Thank you” for all the memories AB. You took cricket to another level for us and put the “gentleman” back into the game.
