In other second round action at the Mutua Madrid Open in Spain today, the fourth seed and favourite, Rafael Nadal, sweated it out for 2 hours and 57 minutes against Italy’s Fabio Fognini to advance with a 7-6(3) 3-6 6-4 win.

Fognini managed to rattle Nadal with his variation in play, but tensed up at crucial times, giving Nadal the gaps that he needed. 

The win sets Nadal up against Nick Kyrgios from Australia. Kyrgios defeated Ryan Harrison of America, 6-3 6-3.

Milos Raonic, the fifth seed from Canada, will now face David Goffin of Belgium, after he defeated Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-4 6-4.

Japan’s Kei Nishikori, ranked sixth in this tournament, managed to defeat Diego Schwartzman from Argentina 1-6 6-0 6-4. Next up for Nishikori is another home favourite, David Ferrer, who advanced without hitting a ball, when Jo-Wilfred Tsonga of France retired due to a shoulder injury.

Other players to advance were Tomas Berdych, Pablo Cuevas and Borna Coric.
