Serena Williams has done it again in what has to be considered as one of her toughest tournaments to date.

The 33 year old American stepped onto Centre Court yesterday hoping to capture her sixth Wimbledon title, her 21st Grand Slam title and also to complete another “Serena Slam” – having already won the US Open last year, followed by the Australian and French Opens this year.

During this Wimbledon fortnight, two of her previous matches were worthy of a Grand Slam final and yesterday proved no different.

Standing in her way was the 21 year old Spanish player, Garbine Muguruza. Muguruza is one of the up-an-coming young players on the tour and got the better of Williams in last year’s French Open tournament.

The final, which lasted one hour and 23 minutes and despite not going to three sets, provided the tennis faithful with some terrific entertainment from both players. Serena started off poorly and Muguruza capitalised taking the early lead. Serena then powered her way back and when the score was 5-4 (40/40) in Williams’ favour, Muguruza hit a ball over the baseline and that was all that Serena needed to get the advantage and take the first set.

Even champions get jittery

In case you were wondering, even Serena Williams’ nerves get the better of her at times and the second set paid testimony to that as she squandered a 5-1 lead to find herself 5-3 up and in trouble on her serve. She had served a double fault but in true Serena style, followed it up with some aces. Muguruza held on for dear life and it took five break points, including acknowledgement from her opponent for her valiant efforts, for her to prevail, which had Centre Court and I’m sure a lot of tennis fans across the world, on their feet. Unfortunately, as pumped up as what she was, Muguruza could just not hold her own serve and Serena went on to win the match and title, 6-4 6-4.
