Svitolina, Ostapenko, Venus Williams and Stephens in French Open action today

The 2018 French Open gets underway today with some big Ladies draw names in action

First up, Elina Svitolina (4) from the Ukraine against Ajla Tomljanović from Australia. Svitolina is certainly the danger player at this year’s French Open. The Ukrainian has already claimed three titles this year, including the recent Italian Open title, where she defeated World No. 1, Simona Halep in two sets.

Svitolina’s best appearances at the French Open – quarter finals in 2015 and 2017.

The current US Open champion, Sloane Stephens (10), is in action against Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands. The 25 year old American player, has struggled to find her feet on the clay surfaces, with a 2013 quarter final appearance being her best result yet.

The 37 year old, legendary stalwart of Ladies tennis, Venus Williams (9) will be hoping that she can reach her first French Open final since 2002. The elder Williams sister, opens her campaign against Wang Qiang of China.

The defending champion, Jelena Ostapenko (5) is liable to have some opening round jitters when she faces Kateryna Kozlova of the Ukraine. Ostapenko rose to fame after defeating Simona Halep in last year’s final.

Another 37 year old stalwart of ladies tennis, Francesca Schiavone of Italy, went through the qualifying stages to advance to this year’s tournament. Schiavone, the 2010 winner, is up against the 20 year old, Viktoria Kužmová of Slovakia.
