The US Open officially got underway yesterday with the players already having to brave the heat on Day 1.

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Marin Cilic, Caroline Wozniacki, Dominika Cibulkova, Petra Kvitova, Milos Raonic and Angelique Kerber all advanced to the second round.

World No. 1, Djokovic, needed four sets to see off his first meeting with Jerzy Janowicz of Poland, 6-3 5-7 6-2 6-1, whilst Nadal only needed three sets, 6-1 6-4 6-2, to send Denis Istomin home.

Kerber was given a easy road to the second round when her opponent, Polona Hercog from Slovenia retired at the beginning of the second set due to illness, with the score in Kerber’s favour on 6-0 6-1.

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson had a good start and was only made to sweat a little by Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka 6-3 7-5 6-4, before advancing to the second round.

In today’s draw, World No. 1, Serena Williams will take on Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova, whilst Men’s No. 2 seed, Andy Murray, will face Lukas Rosol.

Other players to look out for include Simona Halep, Stan Wawrinka, Agnieszka Radwanska, Kei Nishikori and Nick Kyrgios.
