Will Serena Williams and Angelique Kerber be fighting it out for the title and the No. 1 ranking during this year’s US Open Tennis Tournament in New York, which starts today?

Williams, the current World No. 1, has a few reasons to want to win this year’s tournament. She is currently enjoying her 185th consecutive week at No. 1, one week shy of equalling another Steffi Graf record, and if she wins the title, she will achieve her 23rd Grand Slam title, one short of the overall record held by Australia’s Margaret Court.

Unfortunately, Williams has been plagued by a few niggles here and there this year and the US Open has in the past, not always brought out the best in her, so going into this tournament, the pressure to perform is certainly on her shoulders.

As her most likely successor, the second seed, Angelique Kerber from Germany, is just 190 points behind Williams on the WTA rankings and has already missed out on one chance at taking over the reigns, when she lost to Karolina Pliskova at the Western & Southern Open final in Cincinnati earlier this month.

Kerber has tasted both Grand Slam final success and failure against Williams in 2016. She came up trumps at the Australian Open but then lost at Wimbledon.
