World No. 1, Angelique Kerber of Germany, got her Wimbledon quest underway with a 1 hour 27 minute, 6-4 6-4 victory over the American player, Irina Falconi, on Centre Court today.

Kerber, who leads World No. 2, Simona Halep by 115 ranking points and World No. 3, Karolina Pliskova by 180 ranking points, will be feeling the pressure at this year’s Wimbledon Championships.

Since taking over the No. 1 spot from Serena Williams and winning the US Open last year, and the subsequent yo-yo that the two have played with the ranking, Kerber has played in 19 tournaments and only reached two finals, without another title to her name.

Her second round opponent will be Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, who defeated Misaki Doi, 6-4 6-3 today.
