Wawrinka ousted on Day 1

The unseeded 21 year old Russian player, Daniil Medvedev, caused the biggest upset on Day 1 of this year’s Wimbledon championships, when he ousted the 5th seed, Stan Wawrinka, 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-1 on Centre Court today.

Wawrinka, who was hoping to become only the 9th mens tennis player to win all the Grand Slam tournaments, was plagued by a knee injury, for which he received ice treatment.

Wawrinka has not enjoyed great success at Wimbledon, having previously lost five times in the first round.

As for Medvedev, he reached the Aircel Chennai Open final this year, losing to Roberto Bautista Agut. He also reached the quarter-finals of the Rosmalen Grass Court and Aegon Championships and lost to Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International tournament.
