The Free State Cheetahs have deservedly ended their season as this year’s 2016 Currie Cup champions, after defeating the Blue Bulls 36-16 at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein earlier today.

The hosts dominated the match from the start with a string of penalties being conceded in the first half, especially by the Bulls, who made far too many unforced errors.

Cheetahs flyhalf, Niel Marais was on song, notching up 21 points off his boot. Fullback, Clayton Blommetjies and wing, Sergeal Petersen both crossed the line for the Cheetahs. Fred Zeilinga, who replaced Marais in the second half, converted the Blommetjies’ try and also slotted over a penalty.

For the Bulls, Tian Schoeman kicked over three penalties in the first half. There was a consolation try for the visitors when Fred Van Zyl crossed the line in the 74th minute and his try was converted by Joshua Stander.

The win marks an undefeated season for the Cheetahs and hopefully they will be able to carry their good form over to next year’s SuperRugby campaign.
