With the WTA Finals in Singapore getting underway tomorrow, and following the withdrawal of Serena Williams due to injury, there was a three way race for the last spot between Johanna Konta, Carla Suarez Navarro and Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Konta, who has been sidelined with an abdominal injury, would automatically qualify if either Suarez Navarro or Kuznetsova didn’t win the Kremlin Cup in Russia this week.

Both players started their campaigns off well, but a wrist injury forced Suarez Navarro to retire during her second round match against Daria Gavrilova of Australia with the score on 6-4 3-0 in Gavrilova’s favour.

This meant that Kuznetsova, the defending champion and wildcard entrant, still had to win the tournament in order to qualify.

Kuznetsova survived two tough three-set matches against Timea Babos and Elina Svitolina on her road to the final.

Gavrilova continued her good form to advance to her first WTA final, but was no match for the defending champion, who needed just 72 minutes to clinch the title with a 6-2 6-1 win.
