The Australian Open Tennis tournament swings into action on 16 January and already some of the Top 10 women players have stumbled during the first tournaments of the 2017 season.

At the Brisbane International Open in Australia, World No. 1, Angelique Kerber lost her quarter-final match to Elina Svitolina 6-4 3-6 6-3. Svitolina was then beaten by World No. 6, Karolina Pliskova, 6-2 6-4 in their semi-final clash earlier today.

World No. 5, Dominika Cibulkova, also lost her quarter-final match against Alize Cornet, 6-3 7-5. Cornet was then handed a spot in the final when World No. 7, Garbiñe Muguruza retired during their semi-final clash today after trailing Cornet 1-4 in the first set. Muguruza had earlier defeated World No. 9, Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5 6-4.

At the Shenzhen Open in China, World No. 3, Agnieszka Radwanska, lost her quarter-final match to Alison Riske 6-2 3-6 6-0.

The biggest upsets of the tournament came from the racquet of World No. 49, Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic, who first ousted World No. 4, Simona Halep, 6-3 4-6 7-5 and then sent World No. 10, Johanna Konta, packing in their semi-final match with a 1-6 6-4 6-4 win.

At the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, World No. 2, Serena Williams lost her quarter-final match to Madison Brengle, 6-4 6-7(3) 6-4.
