The scene was set, or so everyone thought………..a Novak Djokovic vs Roger Federer final on Monday, with Federer hoping to clinch his 18th Grand Slam title.
But first it was the semi-finals and Novak Djokovic was up against Japan’s Kei Nishikori, who is the first Asian man in the Open era to reach a semi-final. Nishikori stunned the No. 1 seed by defeating him 6-4 1-6 7-6 6-3 in front of his coach and former French Open champion, Michael Chang. As if to celebrate his win, the clouds opened and the second semi-final between Roger Federer and Marin Cilic had to be delayed.
When play eventually got underway, Cilic demolished the former champion in one hour and 45 minutes, 6-3 6-4 6-4 to advance to his first Grand Slam final.
One thing we now know for sure is that there will be a new US Open Men’s champion on Monday evening.
