There was some scintillating tennis being served up at Wimbledon today.

In the Men’s draw, Nick Kyrgios from Australia upset the seventh seed, Milos Raonic from Canada 5-7 7-5 7-6 6-3 in a battle of the big servers. Kyrgios, a born entertainer who loves interacting with both the crowd and officials during his matches, will now face Richard Gasquet of France who ended Grigor Dimitrov’s run with a 6-3 6-4 6-4 win.

South African hopeful, Kevin Anderson set up a fourth round clash against the defending champion and World No. 1, Novak Djokovic, after defeating Leonardo Mayer 6-4 7-6 6-3. Djokovic easily swept his opponent, Bernard Tomic aside with a 6-3 6-3 6-3 win.

Bad light halted play between John Isner and Marin Cilic with the scores level at 10-10 in the fifth set.

Match of the day

In their first ever meeting on a tennis court, Top seed Serena Williams was made to dig very deep when she faced the British No. 1 and crowd favourite, Heather Watson in their third round match.

Serena easily coasted through the first set, but the 23 year old Brit stuck to her solid game plan, breaking Serena’s momentum and with the crowd and a very animated mother, Michelle behind her, managed to secure the second set.

With the momentum now firmly in her corner, Watson raced to a 3-0 lead in the final set and almost made it 4-0, but Serena fought her way back to level the score. The tension was so apparent in her box, that it took an extended roar to bring some comic relief to her mother, Oracene Williams.

Watson then had another chance to serve out the match, but Serena had the final say. She broke the Watson serve, held her own and then broke again to finish off the match with a 6-2 4-6 7-5 win. There was understandably little exchange between the two mentally and physically exhausted players immediately after the match – one grateful to have survived the contest while the other, reflecting on what should have been.

Serena and older sister Venus will now battle it out for a place in the quarter-finals.

Maria Sharapova (4), Lucie Safarova (6), Coco Vandeweghe, Victoria Azarenka and Belinda Bencic also advanced to the fourth round.
