Imagine being the German tennis player, Dustin Brown yesterday.

You are participating at the Wimbledon Championships, which is generally regarded as the crème de la crème of the Grand Slam tournaments. You have to date, achieved your best Grand Slam result here, reaching the third round in 2013.

You managed to get through your first round match in four sets, but then you realise that your next opponent is one of the all time greats of tennis, none other than the Spaniard, Rafael Nadal, and to top that, you are playing against him on Centre Court.

This would be considered a privilege and at the same time, a daunting prospect for so many.

Nadal is a past master at putting his body on the line for this sport, and if anyone could be termed as giving more than 100% on any given day, he will undoubtedly win hands down. But playing at and maintaining that level does come at a price, which the Spaniard has and continues to pay through injury after injury, resulting in a drop in form and only being seeded tenth in this year’s tournament.

But the day belonged to Brown, who despite having had his serve broken and losing the second set, kept his nerve – not allowing his opponent or the “big stage” to get the better of him, which is all that Nadal could have hoped for. Nadal had his opportunities – missing a number of easy chances and not serving at his best. The final score was 7-5 3-6 6-4 6-4.

From travelling in a camper van around Europe so that he could compete in tournaments, to a Centre Court win against Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon, Dustin Brown has certainly made his mark.
