Day 3 at Wimbledon served up hot weather and even hotter results, albeit not for some of the seeded players.

Top seed, Serena Williams continued her dominance with a 6-4 6-1 victory over Timea Babos of Hungary whilst fourth seed, Maria Sharapova made quick work of Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands with a 6-3 6-1 win.

Seventh seed Ana Ivanovic was not as lucky. Her opponent on the day, the ever growing in confidence and always colourful American, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, needed just over an hour to end the Serb’s quest 6-3 6-4. Ivanovic has never progressed passed the semi-finals at the AELTC.

Another player on the rise, 11th seed Karolina Pliskova of Czechoslovakia came up short against the American Coco Vandeweghe in two sets, 7-6 6-4.

Lucie Safarova, Andrea Petkovic, Belinda Bencic, Victoria Azarenka and Samantha Stosur all advanced.

Five-time former champion, Venus Williams was made to work in overcoming Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 7-6 6-4, to set up a third round encounter with Aleksandra Krunic of Serbia.

The Williams sisters fall in the same half of the draw and may possibly face one another in the fourth round. If you are a betting person, you would probably put your money on Serena, but it may be advisable to give it some thought first as not only has Venus’ form drastically improved over the past year, she also won their last meeting in Canada in 2014. There is also not much in the Head2Head stats, with Serena leading her older sister 14-11.
