With a definite onslaught of younger players putting their hands up for titles, the Women’s Singles race for Wimbledon 2015 could well produce some upsets. The likes of Timea Bacsinszky, Carla Suarez Navarro, Lucie Safarova and Belinda Bencic are starting to make waves on the tour.

But, in saying that, there is still one player standing in everyone’s way – current World No. 1 and five-time champion, Serena Williams. The American has not only captured the first two Grand Slam titles in 2015, won another title, equalled and smashed a number of records along the way, she is also two Grand Slam titles away from equalling Steffi Graf’s record of 22.

The younger Williams sister, who again reaffirmed why she is one of the greats of the game, after she fought back from a set down to defeat Timea Bacsinszky in the semi-finals and then Lucie Safarova in the French Open final despite battling flu which kept her from training and attending a press conference between the two matches, is clearly not ready to be knocked of her solidly cemented No. 1 ranking yet.

Seeded second is the defending champion and 2011 winner, Petra Kvitova. The shy Czech has already captured two titles this year and is also a member of the Czech Fed Cup team, who have advanced to the 2015 final. Despite time off for exhaustion and missing the Eastbourne tournament due to illness, she may be the one person who could spoil the party for Williams, for a second time this year.

Simona Halep is seeded third. The diminutive, gutsy Romanian, who despite having captured three titles this year, has not faired well at the first two Grand Slams, will be hoping for some good form on the grass courts.

The 2004 champion, Maria Sharapova is seeded fourth and will always be a threat to any player being subjected to her “never say die attitude” and steely stare from across the net. The Russian has surprisingly only won two titles this year and will be keen to break her Wimbledon title drought.
