The stage was set for the 2014 US Open Women’s Final and Serena Williams not only grabbed the opportunity to defeat her close friend, Caroline Wozniacki 6-3 6-3, but also to join Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova in winning 18 Grand Slam titles.
It was evident from the onset that Williams looked the stronger of the two players despite there having been four service breaks in the first five games. She never gave Wozniacki a chance to find her rythm and kept on hammering her power shots past the Dane.
For her efforts, she earned $3 000 000 in prize money, another $1 000 000 bonus cheque for ending No. 1 on the Emirates list and an 18ct gold bracelet to signify her 18th Grand Slam title, handed to her by Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.
