In an action packed Day 2 so far at Roland Garros, the third seed, Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland narrowly avoided becoming the first defending French Open Men’s Champion to suffer a first round defeat.

His opponent today was Lukas Rosol, who he had beaten in the semi-final in Geneva last Friday. Rosol is no stranger to scalping the champions and will always be remembered for brushing Rafael Nadal aside at Wimbledon in 2012.

The pendulum swung as Rosol claimed sets 1 and 3, whilst Stan managed to get 2 and 4 under the belt. Despite the 56 winners, it was the 46 unforced errors that almost cost Stan the match. Luckily for Stan, Rosol ran out of steam and the experienced Swiss player was able to capture the last set and match. The final score was 4-6 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-4. Wawrinka will now face Japan’s Taro Daniel in Round 2.

Other players to advance included Kei Nishikori, Gilles Simon and Milos Raonic, Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov lost to Viktor Troicki of Serbia 6-2 3-6 7-5 5-7 3-6.

In the Ladies Draw, second seed, Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep notched up easy wins while Garbine Muguruza was made to work in her three set win against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who enjoys the clay surface and seemed to fair better in the colder conditions. The score was 3-6 6-3 6-3.

Men’s second seed, Andy Murray is currently caught up in a battle against Radek Stepanek. Stepanek took the first two sets, Murray the third and he is currently leading 3-1 in the fourth set.
