There was limited action on Day 1 at Roland Garros today as rain hampered the day’s play.

Opening proceedings in the Ladies Draw on Court Philippe-Chatrier were two-time Grand Slam Champion and 10th seed, Petra Kvitova of Czechoslovakia who faced Danka Kovinic of Montenegro. The two players did battle earlier this year at Indian Wells, when it took Kvitova three tough sets to advance. Today was no different with the Montenegrin pushing Kvitova again, but in the end, experience counted and Kvitova narrowly managed to advance with a 6-2 4-6 7-5 victory. Kvitova later tweeted “Let’s just say I’m glad that one is behind me 🙂 and sorry for your blood pressure #petrainparis”

In the Men’s Draw, Australian, Nick Kyrgios lived up to his reputation and gave everyone something to either smile or moan about when he yelled “Towel” louder than usual at a ball kid and for his efforts received a code violation from chair umpire, Carlos Ramos. After a few words were exchanged, it was back to business for the Aussie, who went on to beat Italian, Marco Cecchinato 7-6(6) 7-6(6) 6-4. In his post-match interview, Kyrgios claimed that the ball kid did not hear his request the first time due to the crowd making such a noise when he had lost the point.
