Roger Federer produced one of the best matches of his tennis career when he fought back from two sets down and a double match point to defeat the flamboyant Frenchman, Gael Monfils in a five-set thriller 4-6 3-6 6-4 7-5 6-2.

Monfils, who has been very controlled during this tournament displayed some more of his athleticism and power in the first and second sets by not allowing Federer to get into any rhythm.

Federer managed to gain control in the third set and was more predominant at the net. His efforts paid off and he forced a fourth set. Monfils bounced back, but in true champion style, Federer who was facing two match points on his serve, remained calm and managed to hold serve and then continued to take the set.

In the fifth set, it was all Federer. Monfils spirit had been broken and the five-time consecutive US Open champion advanced to the semi-finals where he will face Croat Marin Cilic who did not battle to send Tomas Berdych (6) home. The score was 6-2 6-4 7-6.
