Super Saturday at the Australian Open produced a mixed bag of results.
The day got off to a bang when the 30th seed, Ekaterina Makarova defeated the 6th seed, Dominika Cibulkova 6-2 6-7(3) 6-3.
The 9th seed, Jo Konta swept past Caroline Wozniacki, 6-3 6-1, whilst Angelique Kerber’s biggest threat, Serena Williams wasted no time in sending compatriot, Nicole Gibbs home, with a 6-1 6-3 win.
Local favourite, Daria Gavrilova set the Rod Laver Arena alight, when she ousted the 12th seed, Timea Bacsinszky, 6-3 5-7 6-4.
Jelena Ostapenko almost made it a double shocker when she gave the 5th seed, Karolina Pliskova a scare, pushing her to a three set thriller, which Pliskova eventually won 4-6 6-0 10-8.
