Unseeded Jana Cepelova of Slovakia caused the biggest upset of the tournament so far when she defeated the third seed, Simona Halep from Romania 5-7 6-4 6-3.

Despite serving up six double faults, mainly due to a blister on her left foot, Halep managed to secure the first set. She then required an injury time out in the second set. Cepelova was unfazed and just continued to attack the Romanian’s second serve to level the match at a set all. Halep started off well in the third set, breaking Cepelova’s serve, but in the end, she could only shake her head as she watched the Slovakian power on and in doing so, abruptly end her Wimbledon title dream.

12th seed, Eugenie Bouchard of Canada’s woeful 2015 form continued when she was ousted by the Chinese qualifier, Ying-Ying Duan in straight sets 7-6 6-4. Apart from Duan’s gutsy performance, Bouchard’s black bra which was partly visible, was the subject of controversy as it was considered a contravention of the players being dressed in almost all white. Luckily for the Canadian, she was not fined. Despite hitting 19 winners, the 10 double faults and 23 unforced errors were her undoing in a day that she’d like to forget.

Defending champion, Petra Kvitova, sailed through easily in her 6-1 6-0 win over Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands. Kvitova, who has not played much competitive tennis this year, mainly due to exhaustion and also illness, looked in good form when she started her title defence.

Caroline Wozniacki, Ekaterina Makarova, Angelique Kerber and Agnieszka Radwanska also all booked their places in Round 2.
