The second ODI between South Africa and Australia was played at the Bidvest Wanderers stadium in Johannesburg today.
The Aussie captain, Steve Smith, won the toss and elected to bowl first.
The Proteas named an unchanged team but the Aussies replaced Scott Boland and Daniel Worrall with Joe Mennie and Chris Tremain.
In a reversal of roles, it was Rilee Rossouw who started attacking the Aussie bowlers first, whilst Friday’s Man of the Match, Quinton De Kock, battled to get going. De Kock was first to go for 22, caught by Chris Tremain off the bowling of John Hastings.
Proteas captain, Faf Du Plessis, was hardly at the crease when he tried to stop a throw in by Aaron Finch and hurt his hand, which needed some attending to. This enabled the Aussie bowlers to tighten the screws and temporarily stop the Proteas free flow of runs. Rossouw was eventually out for 75, after being caught by the substitute, Worrall off the bowling of Hastings.
JP Duminy then joined Du Plessis and together they scored 150 runs before Duminy was out for 82 after chancing his arm against Mitchell Marsh. It was interesting that it took 40 overs before the Proteas got their first 6, courtesy of Duminy. Du Plessis scored 111 before being caught by Steve Smith off the bowling of Marsh.
The Proteas ended their allotted 50 overs on 361/6. John Hastings was the best of the Aussie bowlers with 3-57 in his 10 overs, with Marsh picking up two wickets.
Chasing down the total, the Aussies got off to a terrible start, when they lost Finch for 1, Smith for 14, Bailey for 9 and Marsh for 19. David Warner scored 50 runs before hitting a great shot but losing his wicket when David Miller took a low catch to his left off the bowling of Duminy. Travis Head (53), Matthew Wade (33) and John Hastings (23) tried to save the Aussie innings, but the writing was on the wall and they were eventually all bowled out for 219 in 37.4 overs.
Wayne Parnell was the best of the Proteas bowlers notching up 3-40, with Kagiso Rabada and Andile Phehlukwayo each picking up two wickets.
The Proteas will now be confident going to Durban for the third ODI on Wednesday and need one more win to clinch the series.
