The Proteas resumed their first innings total on 353/3 this morning, still trailing England’s first innings total by 276 runs with Captain, Hashim Amla on 157 and Faf Du Plessis on 51.

Shortly after scoring his double ton, Amla was bowled by Stuart Broad for 201, with the score on 439/4. Du Plessis went on to score 86 runs before being caught by Ben Stokes off the bowling of Jimmy Anderson. Quinton De Kock was the only batsmen who failed to make an impact and only scored 5 runs before being caught by Anderson off Broad’s bowling.

But as much as it was Amla’s day, we had the opportunity to watch two new heroes in the making – Temba Bavuma and Test cricket debutant, Chris Morris. Morris joined Bavuma with the score on 449/6 and together they added 167 runs. It was like watching David and Goliath in action, but on the same team this time. Morris, at 1.95 metres tall towered over the tiny 1.67 metre frame of Bavuma.

The youngsters played like “old” pros. They kept the scoreboard ticking, gladly accepted the boundaries when they came, frustrated the bowlers, survived a few scares and were rewarded for their great efforts. Bavuma scored his maiden test century in style by hitting a four, much to the delight of everyone. His efforts gained him praise from around the world.

Morris scored 69 runs before being caught by Joe Root off Steven Finn’s bowling. With Bavuma on 102 not out, Amla decided to declare with the score on 627/7 and still trailing by 2 runs.

The visitors were put in to bat and at stumps on Day 4, were 16/0 with Alastair Cook on 8 and Alex Hales on 5.
