With the French Open starting on 16 May 2016, one has to wonder when the World No. 1 Ladies Tennis player, Serena Williams, is going to capture another title, let alone her 22nd Grand Slam title.
The usually dominant Williams has been experiencing a dry spell since winning the Western & Southern Open title at Cincinnati, Ohio in August 2015. Her shock defeat at the hands of Roberta Vinci at the US Open in September, followed by time off to recover from injuries has certainly not helped her cause.
Things certainly started looking up for her at the Australian Open in January this year, but Germany’s Angelique Kerber spoilt that party by claiming her first Grand Slam title since turning pro in 2003. Williams has since lost to Victoria Azarenka in the Indian Wells final and then to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the 4th round of the Miami Open last week.
Despite her drop in form, she is still 3730 ranking points ahead of the current World No. 2 player, Agnieszka Radwanska, so she won’t be relinquishing her spot at the top quite yet.
Maria Sharapova relaxes in Mexico
Things have gone quiet in Sharapovaland since Maria Sharapova’s shock announcement on 7 March 2016 that she had failed a drug test at the Australian Open in January this year.
She has been provisionally suspended by the ITF (International Tennis Federation) pending determination of the case and was recently spotted holidaying in Mexico with good friend, Chelsea Handler.
While there is not much love lost between Sharapova and some of her fellow tennis rivals, one must commend her for not passing the buck and for taking full responsibility for her actions.
She has been the top earning female athlete since 2005 and while Nike, TAG Heuer and Porsche have cut ties with her, it will be interesting to see what the final outcome will be for undoubtedly one of the most photographed and in demand female athletes of all time.
