Five time US Open Champions, Roger Federer and Serena Williams both played their opening matches and advanced easily.

Two time champion, Victoria Azarenka, who has been off form of late, was tested by Misaki Doi of Japan. Despite many frustrations on the day, Azarenka managed to advance 6-7 6-4 6-1.

Another former Champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova had to dig deep but was unable to produce the magic as she lost to Marina Erakovic of New Zealand 3-6 6-2 7-6.

South African Chanelle Scheepers put up a spirited fight but lost to American Christina McHale 6-2 1-6 7-6.

Other ladies to advance included Ana Ivanovic, Samantha Stosur, Eugenie Bouchard and Petra Kvitova.

Despite Sam Querrey and Robert Bautista-Agut being pushed to five sets, there were relatively easy wins for John Isner, Kei Nishikori, Bernard Tomic, David Ferrer and Gael Monfils.
