Showman Nick entertains the crowds

Day 1 of the US Open kicked off and there was early entertainment courtesy of the 19 year old Australian, Nick Kyrgios who needed four sizzling sets to send Russian, Mikhail Youzhny (21) packing 57 76 62 76. Kyrgios has certainly learnt two things in 2014 – how to improve his tennis and how to play the crowd.

Romania’s Simona Halep (2) was tested by American Danielle Rose Collins, but managed to advance with a 67 61 62 victory.

In a battle of the “old girls”, two time former champion and 34 year old Venus Williams took on 43 year old Kimiko Date-Krumm. Williams, who has enjoyed better form of late looked rather sluggish for most of the match. Date-Krumm did not only have to contend with moments of the Williams magic but also with a bee that refused to buzz off. At 43, the Japanese player still knows how to move quickly. Williams won the match 26 63 63.

There were also wins for Agnieszka Radwanska, Andy Murray, Angelique Kerber, Novak Djokovic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Stanislas Wawrinka, Jelena Jankovic and Maria Sharapova.
