Day 8 of the US Open saw the players competing in blistering conditions.

The last of the three remaining Top 10 Ladies seeds, Canadian Eugenie Bouchard stepped out on court to play against Russian Ekaterina Makarova. Bouchard, who has had a great run at the Grand Slams this year by being the only player to reach the semi finals of each slam, hasn’t looked in great nick during this tournament. She had tough second and third round matches, each going the full distance. During this match however it was the heat, pressure and Makarova’s consistent game that sunk the Canadian.

Bouchard received a medical timeout when she complained of feeling light-headed and dizzy during the second set and there was doubt as to whether she would be able to continue. When the match resumed, Bouchard still appeared out of sorts and Makarova took advantage of it. Bouchard had a glimmer of hope when her game seemed to improve and she broke back to level the scores. The damage had unfortunately already been done and Makarova edged past her to win the match 7-6 6-4.

Later, fellow Canadian Milos Raonic was in action against Japanese player, Kei Nishikori. After four hours and nineteen minutes, and with the players trying to find extra reserves of energy towards the end, Nishikori defeated the Canadian 4-6 7-6 6-7 7-5 6-4 to set up a quarter final clash with Stanislas Wawrinka who defeated Tommy Robredo 7-5 4-6 7-6 6-2.

Top seeds, Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams continued their good run by advancing to the quarter finals along with Flavia Pennetta, Andy Murray and Victoria Azarenka.

In quarter final action today will be Belinda Bencic vs Shuai Peng, Grigor Dimitrov vs Gael Monfils, Roberto Bautista Agut vs Roger Federer, Caroline Wozniacki vs Sara Errani, Marin Cilic vs Gilles Simon, Thomas Berdych vs Dominic Thiem.

South African Raven Klaasen will also be in quarter final action with his doubles partner, American Eric Butorac.
