Day 7 of the US Open produced more upsets for the seeded players.

In the Men’s draw, South African Kevin Anderson’s dream of a first grand slam title ended when he was defeated by Croatian Marin Cilic 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-4.

David Ferrer (4) became the first Top 10 mens seed to exit the tournament when he lost to Gilles Simon (26) 6-3 3-6 6-1 6-3.

Tomas Berdych, Grigor Dimitrov, Gael Monfils and Roger Federer all advanced.

In the Ladies draw, Sara Errani (13) ended Mirjana Lucic-Baroni’s spirited US Open run with a 6-3 2-6 6-0 win.

Shuai Peng reached her first ever Grand Slam quarter final when she defeated Lucie Safarova (14) 6-3 6-4.

Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic produced another great performance when she ousted nineth seeded Jelena Jankovic 7-6 6-3. Bencic who is coached by her dad and occasionally also by Melanie Molitor, Martina Hingis’ mother, credits growing up and watching Hingis play as a huge part of her success.

The “Ice Queen” exits the US Open

The match of the day undoubtably belonged to the two former No. 1 tennis players, Maria Sharapova (5) and Caroline Wozniacki (10). Sharapova won the tournament in 2006 and Wozniacki was a finalist in 2009.

In a tight first set, Wozniacki had the edge but it was the second and third sets that produced some of the best tennis in the Ladies draw this year.

In true Sharapova style, she fought back in the second set and the louder she screamed, the harder she hit the ball, winning some unbelievable points by flicking and curving the ball past Wozniacki.

Wozniacki seemed to be inspired by Sharapova’s fightback producing some of her own magic in the third set, especially in the fourth game where she ran across the length of the baseline three times to return shots with Sharapova eventually losing the point by netting a volley. Wozniacki lifted her arms and the crowd responded by standing and applauding the rally of the match.

From there on it was all Wozniacki, who was not fazed by Sharapova’s vocal abilities and steely “Ice queen” glances from across the net. Wozniacki went on to win the match 6-4 2-6 6-2 and in doing so, set up a quarter final match against Sara Errani.
